What successful thinking looks like

Your goal is to explain a digital decision, weigh its consequences and defend a judgment when the situation changes.

Before the independent /8 response

Know the standard. Make your own decision.

You will receive a new situation in class. Use its specific facts. There can be more than one justified conclusion. These are classroom paraphrases of the Paper 1-style holistic bands; your teacher judges the response as a whole.

Raw markQuality of the response
0The response does not reach the qualities described below.
1–2Mainly assertions or description, with little accurate use of the situation and limited attention to the decision.
3–4Some accurate knowledge and explanation of an impact. The reasoning is uneven or the recommendation needs stronger support.
5–6Accurate details support effective analysis of benefits and risks in this context. The response is organized; weighing the competing considerations may be limited.
7–8Focused evaluation connects the mechanism, different stakeholder consequences and a meaningful trade-off. The recommendation is well supported and qualified by relevant conditions or uncertainty.

This is a raw mark out of 8, not an IB grade out of 7. A list of vocabulary or a longer answer does not automatically earn a higher band.

Five checks for a stronger response

  1. Mechanism: what data enters, what rule or process acts, and what decision follows?
  2. Evidence: which supplied detail supports this claim? What does it not establish?
  3. Consequences: who gains or loses something, and why?
  4. Weighing: which competing consideration matters most here? Explain the reason.
  5. Judgment: what should happen, under which conditions, and what would make you reconsider?

Use these checks to inspect reasoning; they are not five separately awarded points or a compulsory paragraph recipe.

Operation Get a 7

The workbook's /4 explanation develops Paper 1 causal reasoning. Connecting source details develops Paper 2 synthesis. The unseen /8 response develops evaluation. A fresh defence and a later retry show whether you can transfer the reasoning. These are practice steps towards demanding exam performance, not a guarantee of a grade.

Show your own thinking

For practice, try first, then use permitted help to clarify a term or question your reasoning. Identify meaningful assistance and retain your initial attempt and repair. Ask your teacher if unsure what help is allowed.

For the independent task: work individually with the supplied stimulus, without the workbook, research, peer help or generative AI. Agreed access supports remain available. The teacher may ask you to explain a choice or respond to a changed condition.

If you get stuck, show the part you can explain. Feedback will identify one next action. Your revised work will sit alongside the earlier attempt.

What is collected?

The workbook and labs receive completion status and focused feedback. The independent response receives a raw /8 and the chapter check a raw /12. These short tasks do not directly become a predicted IB grade. Submit through the method your teacher specifies; these pages do not send work to Google or PowerSchool.
